This paper takes a long, hard look at literacy as something far bigger and far messier than the simple ability to read and write. It wanders through the many definitions and types of literacy that have grown up around us digital literacy, critical media literacy, cultural literacy, multimodal literacies, and more and asks what each of them actually demands of learners and teachers. From there, it digs into the psychological side of things: the cognitive, social-emotional, and ecological forces that decide how people pick up literate practices and what they do with them. Major psychological theories cognitive developmental theory, sociocultural theory, and constructivism get a thorough working-over, with an eye to what they mean for real classrooms. A historical sweep follows, tracing how literacy pedagogy moved from behaviourist drilling to the sociocultural and critical approaches that dominate today. Threaded through all of it is a running concern with practice: what all this theory and history actually asks of teachers, especially those working in diverse and multi-dialectal settings like Guyana.
